London Design Biennale 2016

an exhibition that was part of the London Design Biennale 2016, highlighting the importance of falaj systems in the sustenance and development of communities in the Gulf

Al Falaj: Water Systems of the Gulf’s Oases is an exhibition that was first displayed at the UAE Pavilion of the London Design Biennale 2016, themed ‘Utopia by Design’.

The exhibition explores the falaj, a native water irrigation system that once stretched across the Gulf, bringing water and vitality to communities in a harsh desert climate. Falaj systems naturally became places where the public and private realms met, building strong communal societies through their unique resource allocation and water management techniques.

Based on the few authentic examples of Falaj systems that are still in use today, the exhibition explores how the falaj system can be adapted for more contemporary use, especially in UAE’s rapidly globalizing cities.
